City Government

The City of American has a Council/Manager form of government. This means that the Mayor and City Council make policy decisions, and the staff, led by the City Manager, implements these decisions.

The City Council has adopted a Strategic Plan for 2014-15 Including a specific Implementation Plan outlining the tasks required to accomplish the goals.  The Strategic Plan also includes a Vision Statement, Mission Statement, Values, Goals and Strategies.

The City Council holds meetings at least two times per month on the first and third Tuesdays of each at 6:30 P.M. at City Hall in the Council Chambers, 4381 Broadway, 2nd Floor. Visit the City Clerk's webpage for a schedule of meetings.

The City’s “Governance Protocols” reflect best practices for City meetings, treating everyone with respect, encouraging robust discussion, and allowing the people’s business to be done in an efficient and consistent manner.

To provide maximum citizen access, current agendas and minutes are published online and can also be viewed during or after each meeting through cable access TV or streaming video by clicking here.
