Requests for information and records may be obtained from the City in the following ways:

By searching the website: The City’s website contains a lot of information regarding programs and services. If you do not find what you are looking for from the City’s website, there are additional ways to obtain information.

By telephone: Simple requests for information relating to City programs and services can be processed at the time a request is made by contacting the appropriate department or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at (707) 647-4369 for referral to the appropriate department.

By visiting the front counter of a department:
Each department maintains a customer service counter to assist with walk-in requests. Departments will make every attempt to respond to your request if the information is readily available. If your request requires additional research, the department will attempt to provide you with a response within three business days. For locations, see the department contact list.

By submitting a request in writing, via e-mail or U.S. mail: Submit your request for specific information from a department directly to that department. You may request public records by using the online form click here to download. If you are unsure as to which department to submit your request to, submit your request directly to the City Clerk’s Office.

Every attempt is made to provide you with a timely response. Crafting your request with as much specificity as possible will facilitate the most accurate and efficient response to your inquiry. There is no charge to review records. However, City policy allows for reimbursement of any duplication costs. Per City of American Canyon Administrative Policy No. 2006 copying and scanning charges are $.20 cents per page and $.25 per page for a two-sided page. Copies of Fair Political Practices campaign and conflict filings are $.10 per page. The City also reserves the right to request a deposit based on the estimate of expected material to be duplicated.

While staff will attempt to provide you with the information and/or documents requested at the time of the request or as soon thereafter as possible, there are times when the information requested may need to be obtained from more than one source or may be stored at an off-site location and certain records may not be disclosed because the records are exempt from disclosure by law. The California Public Records Act, Government Code Sections 6250 through 6270.5 describes what types of records are exempt as well as the timeframe required by agencies for responding to requests for records.

Government Code Section 6253(c) states “each agency, upon request for a copy of records, shall within 10 days from receipt of the request, determine whether the request, in whole or in part, seeks copies of disclosable public records in possession of the agency and shall promptly notify the person making the request of the determination and the reasons therefor. In unusual circumstances, the time permit prescribed in this section may be extended by written notice by the head of the agency or his or her designee to the person making the request, setting forth the reasons for the extension and the date of which a determination is expected to be dispatched. No notice shall specify a date that would result in an extension for more than 14 days.”
