Picnic Shelters - Coming to a Park near You!
Have you seen these new signs around town? Picnics and family gatherings in American Canyon are about to get a whole lot cooler! New picnic shelters are coming to Silver Oak Park, Community Park 1 and Veterans’ Park. Before you know it, we’ll have fabulous updated parks and new rentable areas for all to enjoy.
Silver Oak Park & Community Park 1 are getting a makeover with new covered shelters, new picnic tables, barbecue grills, and trash and recycling cans. Two areas at Veteran’s Park will also be improved with new picnic areas, including tables, barbeque grills, trash and recycling cans, and covered shelters – one located at the north end, and the other at the south end, near the playground. Shade structures at the dog park entrance, and at the bocce courts, will also be installed. Please bear with us over the next couple months while we undergo construction.
Project Site Plans:
As a part of the recent Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment, residents were asked about community parks and recreation needs and the results identified a significant desire for covered picnic shelters. The consultant who facilitated the survey indicated the demand was the highest he had seen in his experience.
So, what is a picnic shelter? Picnic shelters are covers similar to those found at Gadwall Park and Shenandoah Park. Picnic shelters provide shade from the sun and shelter from the rain, both of which increase the usability of the picnic facilities.
Our staff researched to determine the ideal locations for shelters. The list was proposed to the Parks and Community Services Commission and Open Space Advisory Committee for discussion and prioritization. Their recommendations were brought to the City Council on February 2, 2016. The City Council approved the purchase and construction for the shelters.
