The City’s stormwater system directs our rainwater runoff directly to its destination – our wetlands and the Napa River.  The stormdrain system includes the street stormdrain inlets and ditches, which flow into our watershed’s creeks and wetlands.  It also includes various constructed basins and ponds designed to slow it down, spread it out and let it sink. Stormwater water, unlike the wastewater from the drains and toilets in your house, is not treated before going into the creeks and wetlands.  Litter, dripping car fluids, car wash soap, dirt, and anything that someone throws into the gutter or pours down the storm drain inlets goes into the wetlands and the Napa River, carrying pollutants to our wetlands and river.

The City of American Canyon is concerned about illicit discharges and appreciates your assistance.  Illicit discharge means any discharge to storm drains that is not composed entirely of storm water except discharges pursuant to a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and discharges resulting from fire fighting activities.
